In recent years, the development of humanoid robots has made significant strides, particularly with models like Tesla Optimus, Figure AI, and Unitree. These robots not only represent technological marvels but could also profoundly impact the future functioning of society.
The Tesla Optimus, developed by Elon Musk's company Tesla, was first unveiled in 2025. Its purpose is to assist and complement human labor, especially in industrial and logistics sectors. Standing at 173 cm tall and weighing approximately 57 kg, Optimus can lift up to 20 kg and move at speeds of up to 8 km/h. The robot is controlled by Tesla's proprietary artificial intelligence system, designed using insights gained from developing autonomous vehicles.
Figure AI is another major player in the humanoid robot market. The AI-driven robots aim to provide support in healthcare and social sectors. Figure AI's robots can interact with people and perform various tasks, such as patient care and household chores. These robots are particularly useful in aging societies where there is an increasing need for elderly care.
Unitree Robotics, a Chinese company, has also made significant advancements in humanoid robots. Unitree's robots have found applications in research and development as well as the entertainment industry. These robots are smaller and lighter than the Tesla Optimus but are extremely agile and capable of performing complex tasks.
The proliferation of humanoid robots could affect numerous jobs, especially those involving low-skilled, repetitive tasks. While industrial robots are already widely used on production lines, the emergence of humanoid robots opens up new possibilities in the service sector. Jobs like warehouse logistics, customer service, and cleaning could potentially be automated with these advanced robots.
However, the spread of humanoid robots raises not only economic but also social questions. How will society accept human-like machines? What ethical and legal challenges will we face? These questions are already sparking serious debates in scientific and political circles.
The pace of technological advancement and the expanding capabilities of robots suggest that humanoid robots will play an increasingly significant role in our daily lives. However, society must prepare for how these changes will impact the labor market and social structures.
