Kingdom Hearts Anime Series Announced for Disney+

Exciting news for Kingdom Hearts fans emerged on August 15, 2026, during the D23 Entertainment Showcase: the beloved video game franchise will come to life as an anime series on Disney Channel and Disney+. The announcement was made by actor Benjamin Bratt, who voices Ernesto de la Cruz in the Coco world of Kingdom Hearts 4.

The series is being developed with the involvement of Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of Kingdom Hearts, alongside the creative team at Square Enix. Rather than a direct adaptation of the games, the new anime will tell an original story set within the Kingdom Hearts universe. While details about the cast and the number of episodes remain under wraps, the first teaser image features Sora and his iconic Keyblade.

Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family, stated that the series aims to be 'unmistakably Kingdom Hearts' while offering new fans a fresh experience in exploring the world. This marks the first time the nearly 25-year-old franchise will appear as a television series, a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix.

Alongside the anime series announcement, the release window for Kingdom Hearts 4 was revealed: the game is expected to launch at the end of 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This release coincides with the franchise's 25th anniversary in the West.

The Kingdom Hearts series began in 2002 on the PlayStation 2 console and has since spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, showcasing a unique blend of Disney and Square Enix characters and worlds. The anime series offers fans a new opportunity to delve even deeper into this magical universe.
