NASA's latest research and development efforts are focused on understanding and utilizing the environments of the Moon and Mars. The probe also observed Mars' two small moons, Phobos and Deimos.

For instance, the agency is testing materials resistant to high oxygen concentrations, crucial for future lunar and Martian missions. Tests conducted by NASA have shown that fabric manufactured by Sturges Manufacturing Company, composed of 60% Kevlar® and 40% polybenzimidazole (PBI), meets NASA's flammability requirements, making it suitable for future astronaut apparel and equipment.
