The basic story begins 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse nearly wipes out all life on Earth. Thousands of people have found refuge on a space station orbiting Earth (a network of space stations and spacecraft) called the Ark. During this time, three generations have been born, leading to the Ark's population exceeding its capacity, with overpopulation threatening the future. 100 juvenile delinquents are sent to Earth in a final attempt to determine if the surface is habitable. They discover that some have survived the apocalypse on the ground, forming various clans and engaging in power struggles with each other. Led by Bellamy and Clarke, the hundred try to survive the harsh surface conditions, fight against hostile grounders, and establish contact with the Ark.
In the second season, the remaining 48 of the hundred are captured by the mountain people and taken to Mount Weather. It is eventually revealed that they are conducting experiments on survivors who are already immune to radiation, giving them a chance for survival since their bodies do not adapt to the remaining radiation on Earth. The medical examination of the 100 shows an even more effective radiation-blocking effect. Their bone marrow could allow the mountain people to become permanently immune to external radiation. Meanwhile, the Ark residents are forced to land-crash on Earth with a spacecraft and begin an alliance with the grounders. The main settlement is renamed Alpha Station.
In the third season, the Alpha Station, renamed Arkadia, comes under new leadership when Pike, a former teacher and mentor, is elected chancellor and starts a war with the grounders. Pike uses very dangerous methods, further deteriorating their already fragile relationship with the grounders. Meanwhile, an artificial intelligence named A.L.I.E. emerges, tasked with providing a better life for humanity. It turns out that it responded to the problem of overpopulation by initiating the nuclear apocalypse that destroyed Earth. The AI takes control over nearly everyone in Arkadia and the capital city of Polis. Clarke destroys A.L.I.E.
In the fourth season, hundreds of nuclear reactors melt down worldwide, resulting in 96 percent of the planet becoming uninhabitable. Clarke and the others try to find a way to survive the next wave of radiation. When it is revealed that the dark-blooded, descendants of the original dark-blooded (Becca, the creator of A.L.I.E. and the first Ground Commander) are immune to radiation, Clarke and the others attempt to recreate the formula that created dark-bloodedness, but the testing fails. They discover an old bunker capable of protecting 1200 people for over 5 years from the new apocalypse. Each of the twelve clans selects one hundred people who can continue living in the bunker. A small group decides to return to space and try to survive in the remnants of the Ark, but Clarke remains alone on the surface of the Earth.
In the fifth season, six years after the nuclear reactors exploded, a prisoner transport ship arrives at the only green spot left on Earth, where Clarke and Madi also live. Madi is the dark-blooded grounder child who survived the latest apocalypse. Survivors in space and the bunker safely return to Earth. A struggle begins between the prisoners and the bunker residents (united as Wonkru) for the habitable valley. The series' heroes must find a way to prevent another disaster. In the season finale, the valley is destroyed, and Earth becomes uninhabitable, leading the surviving people to decide to travel to another planet to start a new life.
Currently, the 6th season is the latest, and its plot has not yet been disclosed.
