The first USB4 devices could be released by the end of next year. According to the standardization body, the work on USB4 is progressing as planned, with specifications nearing the nearly final 0.96 version. In an optimal scenario, the 1.0 version could be completed within a few months, paving the way for the relatively swift arrival of USB4 devices capable of transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps. The body currently considers it possible that compatible devices may arrive by the end of next year, which is likely not impossible, but the widespread adoption is expected to begin more in 2021.
The statement is interesting in light of the fact that the directly preceding USB 3.2 is still not supported by anything. The ASM3242 chip from the design company under the Asus umbrella is considered final, so it will soon be available to interested manufacturing partners. If everything goes according to plan, the first products based on the controller could hit the market in August and will support transfer speeds of 20 Gbps.
